2013 Australian Cup Betting Favourite is Green Moon

Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon is an early favourite to record a “cups double” this autumn in the $1 million Group 1 2013 Australian Cup (2000m).

Green Moon

Green Moon is favourite to win the Australian Cup

The six-year-old entire is at $4.20 to add another big feature to his record after experiencing career best form during the spring.

A British import owned by Lloyd Williams, Green Moon also won the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes and finished the carnival with his record standing at seven wins from 20 starts and a prize pool of more than $4.6 million.

Following closely in betting is Caulfield Guineas winner All Too Hard who is at $4.60 to claim the Flemington feature on March 9.

The team Hawkes-trained colt is also coming off a stellar spring where he backed up his Caulfield Guineas win with a bold effort to finish second in the Cox Plate.

Outside the top pair the market begins to open up, with Gai Waterhouse-trained import Glencadam Gold ($8) the only other horse under doubles figures.

The five-year-old import made an excellent start to his Australian career in the spring with wins in the Group 1 Metropolitan and Group 3 Newcastle Cup as well as a sixth-place finish in the Melbourne Cup.

At $12 is Michael Moroney’s Group 1-winning entire Glass Harmonium who was last seen producing a brave front-running effort only to be defeated in the dying stages of the Mackinnon Stakes in November.

Mawingo ($13) is just behind and trainer Anthony Freedman will be hoping he can return to the form shown during the winter after his spring campaign was cut short after just two disappointing starts due to injury.

The German import excelled in his first Australian campaign when taking out the Group 1 Doomben Cup and placing in the Brisbane Cup.

Others under $20 in the Australian Cup market include Lloyd Williams-owned seven-year-old Mourayan ($14), Perth star Mr Moet ($17) and French import Prairie Star ($17).

Markets are now available for a number of the autumn’s big feature races so head to bookmaker.com.au to back an early winner.
