Globetrotting mare Ortensia is likely to be given the chance to defend her title in the US$1 million 2013 Al Quoz Sprint (100m) after trainer Paul Messara yesterday nominated her and two of his other charges to compete on 2013 Dubai World Cup night.
Messara is set to be the only Australian trainer to take any of his charges to the lucrative meeting with recent stable addition Soft Sand and Mic Mac making up the team of three.
The pair have both been nominated for the $US2 million 2013 Dubai Golden Shaheen (1200m) which is one of the bigger races on the card.
While Ortensia has all but booked her ticket overseas, Messara admits both Mic Mac and Soft Sand have plenty to prove to warrant the journey.
Talented mare Soft Sand has recently joined Messara from Colin Little at Caulfield and Messara said she would have to “win something decent” on home soil to join his stable star Ortensia in the middle east.
The four-year-old has always been highly rated and she showed a glimpse of that in her final spring start when running second in the Group 1 Myer Classic.
Seven-year-old gelding Mic Mac broke his leg in the Galaxy last year but is reportedly completely over the injury and ready to resume in the autumn.
The son of Statue Of Liberty is a dual winner at Group 2 level and has an overall record of seven wins from 20 starts.
Multiple Group 1 winner Ortensia is on track for a first-up test against Black Caviar in the Group 1 2013 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) on February 16.
The seven-year-old mare will trial on Tuesday in what will be her final piece of serious galloping before the Lightning.
Adelaide trainer Paul Beshara also entered Happy Trails for $US5 million Dubai Duty Free but is unlikely to make the trip and will instead be targeted towards the Doncaster Mile.
