First Command Leads 2013 WJ Adams Stakes Field

Anthony Freedman’s flying veteran sprinter First Command will look to maintain their unbeaten status this time in when the seven-year-old vies for their third win on the trot in the WJ Adams Stakes 2013 at Melbourne’s Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday.

First Command

Dual Kensington Stakes winner First Command shoots for their third win on the trot in the WJ Adams Stakes 2013

The in-form Commands gelding is one of seven horses accepted for the $120,000 Monjon Security W.J. Adams Stakes (1000m), running as Caulfield Race 4 at 2:45pm (AEST) on Saturday, and will carrying the 60.5kg top-weight.

Along with the hefty kilo allocation, 3.5kg more than any other runner, First Command also has to overcome the far outside barrier with Glen Boss aboard for the ride.

Breaking a year-long winning drought two starts back with a first-up victory over this track and distance, First Command made it two straight at Flemington on January 19 when successfully defending their title in the Listed Kensington Stakes (1000m) – Boss in the saddle for both of those runs.

Following First Command in the WJ Adams Stakes field and weights is then Stephen Brown’s resuming galloper Canali (57kg) who has drawn well in barrier two.

The Exceed And Excel six-year-old hasn’t raced since the start of December when fifth in an open handicap over 1100m at Caulfield and is out to break a lengthy drought not having won a race since the 2011 Victoria Cup.

Horses that come off better recent form meanwhile include the consistent David Jolly-trained Avoid Lightning who will be ridden by Craig Williams after a good first-up second at Moonee Valley a month back, Octagonal seven-year-old Eight Bills who was a close third at this track and distance on Australia Day last Saturday, and Michael Hibbs’ Kensington Stakes runner-up Light Express.
