Hvasstan is on the verge of making his highly anticipated return to racing during the 2013 autumn racing carnival.
The three-year-old will be having his second race campaign after a successful spring carnival last year.
Hvasstan is trained by Peter Gelagotis, who is confident that the colt is the star of his small stable.
The Fastnet Rock was purchased for $260,000 at the 2011 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, which was a big ask from the Moe trainer.
“We stuck our necks out, we had to find owners for him, but we liked him that much,” Gelagotis said.
The initial outlay seems to have paid off for Gelagotis, who trained Hvasstan to win the Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes last October.
The speedy stayer then went on to place a gallant fourth in the Group 1 Victoria Derby at Flemington on November 3, 2012.
Hvasstan is now preparing for an autumn campaign and is excelling in leaps and bounds.
“I can tell you, we are very, very happy with him,” Gelagotis said.
“He went round in a private trial at Cranbourne last week and I was impressed – and so was Glen Boss who rode him.
“I initially thought we might have been chasing our tails a bit. But I’m not thinking that now.
“He pulled up like he never went around.”
Hvasstan will have his first start of 2013 in either the Group 2 Autumn Stakes or the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes at Flemington.
He will then have a light campaign, that will include the Group 1 Australian Guineas on March 2, 2013, before going on towards another spring racing preparation.
“That’s a race that would help establish him as a stallion,” Gelagotis said of the 2013 Australian Guineas.
“But he’ll go where it suits him best, that’s how it’ll always be.”
Hvasstan has won three of his seven race starts and has earned close to $250,000 in prize money during his short career.
