Western Australia’s marquee sprinter Barakey has produced another strong trial win at home ahead of his trip east for a tilt at the Group 1 2013 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 23.
It was the second trial in two weeks for the unbeaten speedster who cruised to a comfortable 2 1/4 length win over his three rivals.
The Jim Taylor-trained gelding appeared to be carrying improved condition, gliding comfortably for the entire 1000m workout.
A son of Key Business, Barakey was never challenged despite being under a strong hold from regular race jockey Jason Brown.
He is showing positive signs ahead of his planned east-coast debut in the Oakleigh Plate where he will attempt to extend his unbeaten streak to 12.
The five-year-old has been untouchable in the west including in his most recent start at Group 1 level in the Winterbottom Stakes in late November.
The Oakleigh Plate is always a strong race and this year will be no different as many trainers attempt to dodge Australia’s darling of the turf Black Caviar who will contest the Black Caviar Lightning on February 16.
A number of galloper have already been announced as targeting the handicap sprint including last year’s winner Woorim.
The Queensland sprinter will be having his first race since May after injury prevented him playing any part in the spring.
Also set to make a long-awaited return in the Oakleigh Plate is former juvenile star Karuta Queen.
The 2011 Magic Millions Classic winner hasn’t raced since a disappointing three-start autumn campaign ended with a ninth-place finish in March.
The recent Peter Moody stable addition is a winner of six of 15 starts and finished second to Black Caviar in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes in October 2011.
