Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Robert Heathcote thinks he may have unearthed another Group 1 contender with Smasher who has been nominated for March’s $600,000 2013 Australian Guineas (1600m).
The leading Queensland trainer has successfully travelled to Melbourne to steal success from southern rivals in recent years and the young gelding is the latest horse to push his claims for a start on the big stage.
The son of Written Tycoon has only been seen in a mid-week race at Doomben so far but he did enough on that day to convince his trainer an entry into Melbourne’s big three-year-old feature was worthwhile.
“It’s rare for any horse to win from a double figure barrier at the 1110 metre starting point at Doomben and he had to do it at both ends of the race,” Heathcote told AAP.
“Horses like him make it easier to get up in the morning.”
Heathcote has always had a high opinion of the horse and has deliberately delayed his entry into racing due to the belief he has such a promising future.
The Eagle Farm trainer has already tasted success at the elite level with Woorim and Solzhenitsyn while Buffering has placed in the top grade on a number of occasions.
“[The Guineas nomination] gives you an indication of what I think of this horse,” Heathcote said.
Woorim will travel to Melbourne to defend his title in the Oakleigh Plate which was the race that delivered Heathcote his first ever Group 1 success.
Sozlehnitsyn will be aimed at the 2013 Doncaster Mile while Buffering is also Sydney bound and expected to kick off his campaign in the 2013 TJ Smtih.
