Australia Day Cup 2013 Betting Tips

It’s Australia Day on Saturday and racing fans are in for a treat with a number of stakes races taking place across the country including the Listed $100,000 2013 Australia Day Cup (2400m) at Warwick Farm.

A big field of 14 horses will attempt to get around the tight-turning track and Gai Waterhouse-trained pair Reuben Percival ($4.20) and Travolta ($6.50) currently head the betting market.

In an open race, Darley pair Angelus ($8.50) and Yulalona ($9) are the two other horses to fall under double figures with a large contingent hovering between $10 and $20.

Horses of note include Group 1 winner Shadows In The Sun ($11), Queensland gelding Carry Me Bluey ($13) and veterans Ironstein and Fiumicino ($15).

Not sure where to put your punting money in the Australia Day Cup? Don’t worry as the form experts have been hard at work so keep reading for some expert Australia Day Cup tips.

The Winner

#7 Shadows In The Sun

He might not have won since the Group 1 SA Derby in May 2011 but we think all the signs are right for the drought to end on Australia Day.

The Anthony Cummings-trained gelding has barely got out to a trip since that win over 2500m and should appreciate the 2400m on offer this weekend.

Was solid when running home for fourth in the Tattersall’s Club Cup and likely to get the run of the race from barrier five.

The Placings

#2 Reuben Percival $4.20 and #5 Carry Me Bluey $13

He’s drawn wide in barrier 14 but if Reuben Percival gets some luck in running he will be right in the mix.

The tough stayer is Group 1 placed, finished second in the Gosford Cup last start and will absolutely eat up the 2400m.

Carry Me Bluey looks to be great value at $13 in what will be the first test south of the border for the former Queenslander. Is coming off a strong win over 2100m in Brisbane that suggested he will only improve with more distance.
