Troy Blacker’s progressive three-year-old filly Settler’s Joy will head towards the Tasmanian Oaks 2013 next month after blowing away her competition at Launceston in the $30,000 Aceland Stud Thousand Guineas (1600m).
The daughter of Tough Speed, a bargain buy for $4,500 from the 2011 Magic Millions Tasmanian Select Yearling Sales, has now won two of her six starts to date improving on her sixth to Mister John in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) earlier in the month.
On Wednesday night ace hoop Craig Newitt guided Settler’s Joy, the $2 favourite in betting, to a sensational three length win over Refuse To Lose ($13.90) while Gee Gees Snowhill ($6.50) finished off the trifecta in third.
It was a cracking run from the winner who came from last on the turn for home to run away from her rivals and hit the line with plenty in the tank indication to Blacker she was a genuine staying type.
“This filly is a dead set stayer and when she gets out to 2100 metres we will see the best of her,” he said.
Another black type assignment is now on the agenda for the up-and-comer, Longford-based Blacker naming the $100,000 Listed Tasmanian Oaks (2100m) on February 20 as Settler’s Joy’s major aim this Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.
“I’ve thought all along he was an Oaks prospect so that’s where we are headed but she will run in the Strutt Stakes on Hobart Cup Day and then go to the Oaks back here in Launceston 10 days later,” he said.
The $100,000 Listed Strutt Stakes (2100m) runs at Hobart on February 10, 2013.
Newitt, who was also aboard Settler’s Joy for her maiden win back on December 19, agreed with Blacker that she would make an excellent Oaks contender and was looking forward to riding her throughout the rest of her campaign.
“The best part about this win was that she was getting stronger over the concluding stages,” Newitt said on Wednesday night.
“We can go to the Strutt Stakes and the Oaks now with a lot more confidence and whatever they send over from the mainland for those races will want to be a bit special to beat her,” he said.
