Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Leon Wells’ smart Spreyton-based mare Rebel Bride stole the show at Launceston Racecourse on Wednesday night winning the $90,000 Listed Tattsbet.Com Stakes (1200m) ahead of a title defense in the 2013 Bow Mistress Trophy.
The five-year-old daughter of Telesto capped off a sensational second prep last Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival scoring her fifth consecutive victory with a massive two length effort over Lady Lynette in the Group 3 Bow Mistress Trophy (1200m) at Hobart.
She hadn’t won a race since until she regained form on the synthetic track a Devonport last start on January 9, Craig Newitt guiding her to an easy victory over Cellarmaster in a quality handicap.
Based on that effort and her advantageous drop back from 59.5kg to 56.5kg last night Rebel Bride jumped the $3.70 favourite in the Tattsbet.Com Stakes and saluted for the punters thanks to a nice ride from Stephen Maskiell.
Repeating the same quinella as last time out on the line Rebel Bride had one and a quarter lengths to spare over the Patrick Payne-trained Cellearmaster ($10.6) who finished in a photo with third placed Banca Mo ($4.10) from the stables of David & Scott Brunton.
It was a lovely performance with Maskiell settling the eventual winner midfield before the defending champ Youthful Jack put the pressure on.
They didn’t back down however and Rebel Bride was able to maintain their position one-out while Youthful Jack and jockey Robert Thompson found themselves three-wide eventually finishing four and a quarter lengths away sixth.
The Bow Mistress is now firmly on the agenda for Rebel Bride once more, the $150,000 fillies and mares clash scheduled for February 3 at Hobart Racecourse, and Wells is confident she is travelling even better this season as she was heading into the feature 12 months ago.
“Last season she went into the feature races at the end of her tether but this time she is at her peak and that will give her a good chance of winning again,” Wells said.
“The mare has done everything we have asked of her and to win like she did tonight is a credit to her ability and I have to thank her owners Chris and Sharon Wickham because they and in particular Chris, do a lot of work with the mare.”
Following the Bow Mistress Wells said Rebel Bride would have one more run this prep in the $100,000 Vamos Stakes (1400m) back at Launceston on February 20, an event she finished a close third to Lady Lynette in last February.
