Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Peter Snowden’s evergreen veteran Lonhro gelding Pinwheel has opened the odds-on favourite to win the Australia Stakes 2013 at Moonee Valley Racecourse this Friday night, the seven-year-old resuming racing after a two month break.
Due to be ridden by Vlad Duric from barrier two in the $220,000 Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) under the lights at the Valley, Pinwheel will face just six rivals following the early scratching of stable-mate Skytrain who will race in the Listed Canterbury Classic on the same night in Sydney instead.
A blistering first-up record of four wins from six attempts when resuming and plenty of exceptional weight-for-age performances including their successful Group double with wins in the Warwick Stakes and Missile Stakes last spring has seen the bookies and punters rally behind Pinwheel first-up.
Last seen running a brave fourth beaten only a length by unbeaten Perth star Barakey in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot on November 24, Pinwheel is paying $1.90 in the latest Australia Stakes odds.
Friday evening will be the top elect’s first look at the notoriously tight circuit at Moonee Valley, but a glowing report from their Winterbottom winning hoop Kerrin McEvoy after a Werribee jumpout last week has the confidence high in camp Pinwheel.
Two of Pinwheel’s fellow Australia Stakes 2013 competitors are also under $10 in betting with:
- #6 Undeniably ($3.70) – Mark Kavanagh-trained six-year-old has been in top form this time in with two excellent runs at Caulfield starting with a second to stable-mate Catapulted in the Listed Doveton Stakes (1000m) before they beat home Sea Lord in the Listed Christmas Stakes on Boxing Day
- #5 Sea Lord ($7.50) – Christmas Stakes runner-up gets the inside run from barrier one here, Stephen Brown’s Street Cry five-year-old undefeated at the track with three wins from as many starts giving them a nice advantage here
Other notable chances then include last year’s DC McKay Stakes winner Outlandish Lad ($11) and Dubleo mare Koonoomoo ($12) who comes off a great win in the Group 3 Herald Sun Stakes (1400m) at Flemington back on Melbourne Cup Day drawn in barriers four and three respectively.
