Victoria’s premier horseman Peter Moody is hoping to score an upset at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday with his undefeated filly Mystical Miss likely to take on the top 2013 Blue Diamond Stakes fancies in the fillies’ preview for the $1 million classic.
An expensive $425,000 buy from last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sales by bloodstock agent Damon Gabbedy on behalf of owner Bob Peters, Mystical Miss is a beautifully bred being by More Than Ready out of former Crown Oaks champion Danehill mare Magical Miss.
She debuted at Ballarat on January 10 and didn’t disappoint with a tidy one and three quarter length victory in a 2YO’s maiden over 1000m.
The competition will be much tougher for her second-up assignment this weekend, Mystical Miss one of 10 smart fillies accepted for the $120,000 Blue Diamond (Fillies) Preview (1000m) which is set to run as Caulfield Race 4 at 2:50pm (AEST).
Currently rated a $9 chance for the BD Preview having drawn barrier eight with Luke Nolen booked for the ride, there is certainly some stiff competition to overcome with six other undefeated fillies and the top two horses in the futures betting markets for the Blue Diamond Stakes (February 23).
Despite not being Blue Diamond nominated at this stage, Daniel Clarken’s exciting Adelaide speedster Miracles Of Life and the Peter Snowden-trained Montsegur are the first and second elects in the pre-field Blue Diamond Stakes odds paying $7.50 and $10 respectively.
They also dominate the Preview markets for Saturday with dual winner Miracles Of Life at a quote of $3 and the rails-drawn Montsegur not far behind on $3.80.
Moody will make an inspection of Mystical Miss on race morning before giving the final green light for her to run, connections not wanting to ruin a lovely filly with a gut-buster if she isn’t quite up to it in this early stage of her career.
“There are some pretty smart ones in that race and she might not be ready for it mentally and physically,” Peters explained.
“From my point of view, if she’s ready to go these things only come around once.
“I didn’t think she’d be an Oaks filly. She’s more of a two-year-old sprinting type of filly and I’m just branching out a little.
“This year we’re moving forward (with two-year-olds) a bit.
“I’ve had a fair few trial, but they’ve gone straight to the paddock afterwards.”
If she does run and score a boilover Mystical Miss, Peters first Moody-trained horse, is set to firm dramatically in her Blue Diamond Stakes 2013 price of $51.
