Montsegur Out to Prove 2013 Blue Diamond Stakes Potential

On Saturday a field bursting with unbeaten fillies will face off in the Blue Diamond (Fillies) Preview at Caulfield Racecourse as they look to stake their claims on the $1 million Patinack Farm Blue Diamond Stakes 2013 next month including the Peter Snowden-trained Montsegur.

The 10-horse field for the $120,000 Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies) (1000m) features an incredible seven hopefuls that are yet to taste defeat, all coming off a win on debut aside from the favourite Miracles Of Life who has had two runs for two wins.

Daniel Clarken’s brilliant Adelaide speedster Miracles Of Life is the current $7.50 favourite in the futures Blue Diamond Stakes odds despite not being nominated for the February 23 feature.

She will look to earn that late entry with a win on Saturday.

“We’ve got that carrot of the Blue Diamond dangling and it’s a nice carrot to be chasing,” Miracles Of Life’s trainer Clarken said.

“She’s got to perform well on Saturday and pull up well before we make any decision.”

It is the same story for New Approach filly Montsegur.

The talented two-year-old occupies the second line of Blue Diamond Stakes betting behind Miracles Of Life at $10 and is also yet to be officially nominated for the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival classic.

If her debut victory was anything to go on, Montsegur is set for big things as she put an effortless three and a half lengths on her closest rival Calcatta in the Joe Brown 2YO Fillies Plate at Caulfield on Boxing Day.

Saturday sees a jockey change with Darley’s head rider Kerrin McEvoy to take over from Vlad Duric in the BD Preview, Montsegur drawn on the rails with barrier one.

The other undefeated fillies in the Preview are then the Peter Moody-trained Diamond Glow, David HayesBulbula, Gai Waterhouse’s Swing Vote to be ridden by Craig Williams, Donna Madeira for Pat Carey and Moody’s other runner Mystical Miss who will have the stables best jockey Luke Nolen in the saddle.

“It’s going to be an intriguing race, the fillies division on Saturday,” Montsegur’s assistant trainer Paul Snowden said.

“There’s going to be a few bubbles that burst. Hopefully it’s not ours.

“She’s in good order.”
