Dan O’Sullivan is confident in-form gelding British General can overcome his latest challenge in the Listed 2013 John Dillon Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
The five-year-old is a short-priced favourite for $120,000 race after putting three straight victories together at Flemington including at Listed level in the Chester Manifold Stakes on January 12.
But the son of General Nediym must adapt to a new venue this weekend and his last trip to Caulfield in December saw him beaten by 11 lengths and finish in ninth position.
O’Sullivan still hasn’t worked out the reason for the poor showing on that occasion but believes there were plenty of things that went against his charge.
“The day he got beaten it was five weeks between runs, the jockey who rode him said he didn’t like being bottled up inside them and it was also a very windy day and all the leaders in that race were the first horses beaten,” O’Sullivan told Racing Victoria.
The John Dillon Stakes was never mapped out as part of British General’s program but his performances so far have enticed the Ballarat trainer to again raise the bar.
“He’s won a Listed race now so we’ll go to another Listed race and see what he can do,” O’Sullivan said.
O’Sullivan is being careful not to get too carried away but hasn’t ruled out the possibility of pushing on to the Group 1 2013 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) in February if British General can make it four in a row this weekend.
One his major challengers is Cranbourne gelding It’s Crunch Time who has won six of 13 starts and and broke through at stakes level in November to claim the Listed Newmarket Handicap in Launceston.
