The now Flemington-based trainer Stephen Brown will continue with the summer staying races around Melbourne with his newly acquired six-year-old grey The Big Steel as they prepare for their main aim of the year, the 2013 Darwin Cup in August.
The Urgent Request gelding has had 25 starts to date for six wins but they haven’t been in the winners’ stall since March of 2011 when taking out a 1514m event at Moonee Valley.
Stephen, formerly from the Northern Territory, hopes that will change this prep with the always honest galloper who has amassed $289,047 in prize money to date.
Formerly prepared at Mornington by Matt Laurie The Big Steel only arrived in Brown’s care on Tuesday morning but he has already named the $185,000 Darwin Cup (2000m) on Monday August 5 at his old hunting ground as the stayer’s major aim.
“All going well we’ll get him up to Darwin for the Cup but in the short term hopefully we can get him back to winning a few races down here,” Brown said.
The Big Steel failed in their two November runs last spring and was last seen finishing ninth when beating home just one other runner in the Ord Minnett Latrobe Valley Cup (1900m) at Trarralgon on December 9.
Racing their best over the 2000m their trainer believes that once they step up in distance they can be more competitive, including in the lucrative Darwin Cup 2013 which will be the horse’s first interstate assignment.
