Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A diminutive field of just five sprinters will face off in the Zeditave Stakes 2013 at Caulfield Racecourse for their Australia Day meeting this Saturday, three of which come off a last start win.
Scheduled as Caulfield Race 2 at 1:30pm (AEST) the $120,000 Listed Zeditave Stakes (1200m) is one of four black type races at the Melbourne meeting and while small in numbers certainly is still worth a punt on at bookmaker.com.au.
Heading the field with the number one saddlecloth is the Peter Snowden-trained Rusambo who will jump from barrier three with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle.
The three-year-old Elusive Quality colt enjoyed back-to-back wins at Moonee Valley in August, including a narrow win in the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m), before their brave third to Golden Slipper runner-up Snitzerland in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington in September.
While Rusambo, the 57.5kg top-weight under the set weights plus penalties conditions of the Zeditave, is resuming racing on Saturday three of their four rivals were in the winners’ stall at their most recent run.
One of those three who shoots for their third win on the trot is the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Happy Galaxy in gate five with Dwayne Dunn to ride.
After a second-up win at Rosehill on New Year’s Day the Nadeem colt backed up 11 days later and showed great improvement and a blistering turn of foot to win a BenchMark 75 by four lengths.
So the form is certainly there for Happy Galaxy but can they bring it to Melbourne and handle racing the other way for the first time since July last year when third to Danehill Stakes runner-up Lucky Double Eight as a two-year-old at Flemington?
Also vying for a trio of straight turf triumphs with a Zeditave Stakes victory is the lightly-raced Peter Moody-trained Royal Haunt who has come up trumps with barrier one, the stable’s leading jockey Luke Nolen in the saddle.
The Hard Spun gelding is undefeated to date having saluted in both of their career starts firstly at Echuca on New Year’s Eve and then at Sale on January 17 when Nolen rode them for the first time.
Their Sale victory was an impressive 2.5 length effort over 1210m when carrying 58kg and while the step up to city class will help prove their potential as a genuine racehorse, they will relish the drop back to 55kg on Saturday.
The final last-start winner out for successive wins is then the well tried Ricky Maund-trained Timely Truce in gate two with Dean Yendall aboard, the Brief Truce three-year-old having won at Kilmore on January 6.
Rounding out the field is then Sam Kavanagh’s Shamardal colt Wakeel in gate four who has been prepared by two other trainers before Kavanagh (David Hayes & Stephen Theodore) in their six-start career so far.
