A glowing report from jockey Kerrin McEvoy on Pinwheel heading into the Group 2 $220,000 Essendon Mazda Australia Stakes(1200m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night has boosted stable confidence in the seven year old.
Even though McEvoy won’t be aboard Pinwheel on Friday because of commitments in Sydney, Darley’s stable rider reported that the Lonhro gelding was feeling as good as ever after competing in a jump out at Werribee last week.
“We took him to Werribee to get a guide on his fitness and he went very well,” he said. “Kerrin rode him and said he felt as good as ever,” said Paul Snowden, Melbourne foreman for Darley.
The Group 2 winner and Group 1 placegetter, to be ridden by Vlad Duiric, won’t be facing a top class weight for age field and looks to be very well placed to run a mighty race first up.
Pinwheel’s fresh record is very good with four wins and a second from six first up runs and has performed well at weight for age races with two wins at Warwick Farm in the Group 2 $175,000 Pro-Ride Warwick Stakes (1400m) and the Group 3 $125,000 McGrath Missile Stakes (1200m) at the beginning of last year’s Spring Carnival.
Snowden gave Pinwheel a short break after returning from Perth where he ran fourth to Western Australia’s new sprinting sensation Barakey in the Group 1 $500,000 Crown Perth-Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot on November 24
Even though Pinwheel is having his first start at Moonee Valley, Snowden has no worries the versatile galloper will handle the tricky circuit with a win at Caulfield and a placing behind Lone Rock in the 2011 Group 1 $350,000 The Distinctive Homes Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville on May 11 to his credit.
“He’s a very adaptable horse so I didn’t imagine that getting around there will any worries for him.” Snowden said.
Pinwheel has drawn barrier two in the small field of seven with the scratching of stable mate Skytrain and will get a cosy good run behind front runner Zedi Knight who finished second behind Black Caviar in this race last year.
