The 2013 Blue Diamond Stakes picture will become somewhat clearer after the two Previews, one for the boys and one for the fillies, run at Caulfield Racecourse’s Australia Day meeting with current favourite Miracles Of Life making her Melbourne debut in the latter.
A 10-filly field has been accepted for the $120,000 Listed Patinack Farm Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies) (1000m), the race scheduled to run one after the one for colts & geldings.
The Daniel Clarken-trained Miracles Of Life will look to confirm her credentials for the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) when she jumps favourite in the Preview on the weekend in her first run outside of her native Adelaide.
The daughter of Not A Single Doubt is undefeated to date with two big wins at Morphettville, the most recent by nine lengths on January 5, and as such has caught the eye of the bookies who have her at the top of their Blue Diamond Futures Odds at a quote of $7.50.
She is not currently nominated for the million dollar classic however and needs to prove she is worth paying the $55,000 late entry for with a good run on Saturday from barrier six with her WA-based apprentice hoop Lauren Stojakovic securing the prized ride.
“I was quietly hoping I was still in the mix of names but I didn’t get too excited. I thought they may have opted for someone else,” Stojakovic, 29 ,said.
“But they’ve chosen me which is awesome. I guess it was a mix of shock, excitement and also a little bit of nerves when I got told.
“I have ridden her in her two starts, in which I didn’t have to do too much to help her, but I know her and she knows me and I think that’s a big help.”
Occupying the second line of Blue Diamond Stakes odds at $10 is another non-nominated filly in Montsegur who is also accepted for the Blue Diamond Preview on the weekend.
Drawn on the rails with Kerrin McEvoy to ride Peter Snowden’s New Approach two-year-old won her debut on Boxing Day at Caulfield by an impressive 3.5 lengths and will look to repeat the feat over the same track & distance here.
A third filly that is holding their own in the Blue Diamond markets that is looking to earn a late entry with a Preview win is then the Peter Moody-trained Diamond Glow ($21) who will jump from barrier two wearing the No. 1 saddlecloth with Vlad Duric in the saddle.
The Bel Esprit filly is another winner on debut when taking out a 2YO Plate over 1000m at this track on January 5, Duric also aboard for that run.
Also paying $21 in the Blue Diamond futures is the Mick Price-trained Kerr (barrier 3 – Craig Newitt), the daughter of Stratum making her debut in the Preview with Price targeting successive Blue Di8amonds following the win by Samaready last autumn.
Other notable hopefuls that are out to score an upset include Pat Carey’s last start Sandown winner Donna Madeira, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Swing Vote who won their debut at Warwick Farm earlier in the month, and Moody’s More Than Ready filly Mystical Miss who is a daughter of former Crown Oaks champ Magical Miss.
