Better Than Ready Back Ahead of 2013 Autumn Racing Carnival

Boom Queensland colt Better Than Ready will return to racing this weekend before heading south to tackle better company at the 2013 Autumn Racing Carnival.

The three-year-old has been entered for both a three-year-old race at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday and an Open Handicap (1200m) on Monday in what will be his first start since reeling off a flying finish to claim the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Randwick in October.

While the autumn is only expected to be light for the Kelly Schewida-trained sprinter, he could contest a big race at the 2013 Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

It could be difficult to gain a start in some of the bigger Melbourne races but Schweida has entered him for the prestigious Group 1 2013 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 9.

Better Than Ready’s autumn campaign is expected to be just two runs with Schweida highlighting the Group 2 2013 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm on February 16 as a possible option.

Following his brief autumn campaign, the exciting youngster will head back to the paddock before his major goals come at the 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Better Than Ready is expected to be aimed at Queensland’s biggest races including the Group 1 2013 BTC Cup and the Group 1 2013 Doomben 10,000.

The well-bred colt has attracted plenty of hype since storming home to win on debut following a big betting plunge in May last year.

He finished fourth in his only other start as a two-year-old but won three of four starts in the early stages of his three-year-old career, showing a blistering turn of foot.

His only defeat came when third in the Jim Beam Handicap in September when an experiment to ride the colt from a forward position failed to pay dividends.
