Berry Back Aboard for 2013 Canterbury Classic Title Defense

One of Sydney’s most exciting jockeys Tommy Berry will reunite with a Canberra-trained galloper he hasn’t ridden for a year as he prepares to vie for back-to-back wins in Friday night’s Canterbury BMW Classic 2013.

Berry first partnered with Matthew Dale’s Not A Single Doubt gelding Unanimously for a close second behind Master Of Design in a Rosehill sprint in July of 2011.

He jumped aboard again in January of last year during the Sydney Summer Racing Carnival guiding them to a smart three quarter length victory over Eight Bills in the $100,000 Listed Canterbury BMW Classic (1100m) after overcoming some early interference.

The horse has failed to win a race since with four different jockeys being aboard for their four subsequent runs.

Dale however has booked Berry again for the Canterbury Park Friday evening twilight meet as the now five-year-old Unanimously prepares to defend their title in the Canterbury BMW Classic.

It will be their first run since August, the horse in good form then having been first past the post in the Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley in their most recent run when ridden by Steven Arnold before that win was stripped from them upon protest.

Dale however believes the horse could be back in the winners’ stall at their resuming run taking confidence from a five length barrier trial win back home last week.

“With this race in mind he’s a bit more forward than usual for his return,” he said.

The 2013 Canterbury Classic field includes plenty of talent with the likes of 2011 Australia Stakes winner Whitefriars and the Peter Snowden-trained duo of Skytrain and Sessions among Unanimously’s eight rivals.

Whitefriars will carry the 61kg topweight and Dale is happy with Unanimously’s 54.5kg which is just half a kilo more than the weight they carried to victory 12 months ago.

“With Whitefriars being in the race it has really compressed the weights and it has worked out well for us,” Dale said.
