Spreyton trainer Leon Wells has taken confidence from his Telesto mare’s tidy win at Devonport earlier in the month believing Rebel Bride is up to the challenge of Wednesday evening’s Tattsbet.Com Stakes 2013.
The five-year-old enjoyed her eighth win at career start number 18 on January 9 when Craig Newitt guided her to an impressive two length win, carrying 59.5kg, over the Patrick Payne-trained Victorian raider Cellarmaster in the Adam Brooks Handicap (1150m) on the Devonport synthetic track.
Having finished out of the money just once, when a close fifth beaten only one length by It’s Crunch Time in the Listed Tasmanian Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Launceston last November, Rebel Bride has been the picture of consistency so far and Wells is hoping she can add another black type win to her record this time in.
She has been up against Group company just once before and relished that challenge when defeating the talented Lady Lynette in the Group 3 Bow Mistress Trophy (1200m) at Hobart last Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival, an event that Wells plans to target again this season on March 2.
Now Rebel Bride has the chance to score more stakes success in the $90,000 Tattsbet.Com Stakes (1200m) at Launceston Racecourse on Wednesday evening, Stephen Maskiell replacing Newitt in the saddle.
“She pulled up well from her last run and you couldn’t wish for her to be any better in herself, she is really good,” Wells said.
“She is going really well. Probably better than she was this time last year.
“She had been knocking on the door before Devonport.”
The race attracted a small eight-horse field this year headed by the defending champ Youthful Jack.
Drawn in gate five tomorrow night the weight-for-age conditions of the Tattsbet.Com Stakes will certainly play in Rebel Bride’s favour as she drops back to 56.5kg, a weight she hasn’t carried since the Newmarket.
The horse Rebel Bride beat home last start Cellarmaster is also in the mix with Michelle Payne to ride, as is Exceed And Excel six-year-old Youbolt who was fourth in the open handicap, Rebel Bride meeting these same rivals 2kg and 1.5kg better in the weights respectively.
“She meets them on better terms in these sorts of races,” Wells said.
“Weight had been killing her a little bit in her last few starts.
“She meets them [Cellarmaster and Youbolt] on better weights tomorrow night and she will be very hard to beat.”
David & Scott Brunton will also saddle up three chances led by the progressive Galibier who is the early favourite to win after the four-year-old, also by Telesto like Rebel Bride, won at Hobart on December 16.
Rebel Bride faced Galibier in the Newmarket last year, the former just finishing better when fourth, but the mare will be 4kg better off on Wednesday.
