All Too Hard and Pierro Top 2013 Australian Guineas Nominations

A mouth-watering rematch between Caulfield Guineas quinella All Too Hard and Pierro is potentially on the cards with the star colts topping nominations for the Group 1 2013 Australian Guineas (1600m).

All Too Hard

Caulfield Guineas winner All Too Hard is one of the top nominations for the Australian Guineas

Seventy six three-year-olds were this morning entered for the $500,000 three-year-old feature which will take place at Flemington on March 2.

While the match-up may not eventuate, nearly all racing fans will be hoping it does, with last year’s Caulfield Guineas one of the best races of the spring.

On that occasion Pierro was a short-priced favourite, and at that stage unbeaten, before All Too Hard ended his reign with a barnstorming finish down the outside.

The Patinack-owned colt again scored bragging rights in their next meeting when he finished runner-up in the Cox Plate with Pierro left to collect third-place honours.

While the Gai Waterhouse-trained Pierro is yet to be confirmed as a Guineas contender, team Hawkes have given every indication All Too Hard will be aimed at the race.

Pierro is joined in nominations by four stablemates including highly-rated colt Proisir, fillies Urban Groove and Driefontein and emerging gelding Spurtonic.

Head Darley trainer Peter Snowden has nominated three of his charges with the contingent headed by talented colt Albrecht.

The son of Redoute’s Choice is yet to race in Melbourne but had an impressive debut campaign in Sydney in the early spring, winning the Group 3 Up and Coming Stakes and finishing second in the Group 1 Golden Rose and the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes.

Anthony Cummings’ gelding Fiveandahalfstar could return to the scene of his greatest victory after winning the Victoria Derby at the Spring Carnival.

While many of the horses nominated have already established themselves, there are just as many raw talents who will get the chance to step up  to the big stage at the 2013 Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

Michael Kent has entered unbeaten colt Philippi who won his first three starts last spring while prominent owner Lloyd Williams has Wales who has not been seen since debuting with victory in the Redoute’s Choice Stakes last April.

Another raw youngster included in nominations is Greg Eurell’s colt Hosting who walloped his rivals by nearly four lengths on debut at Mornington in August.

Other horses included in Australian Guineas nominations are Victoria Derby runner-up Super Cool, Team Hawkes recent stable addition Ninth Legion and Peter Gelagotis-trained stakes winner Hvasstan.
