2013 Canterbury Classic Nominations – Friday Night Racing

While the headline Friday night racing action will be Moonee Valley’s Australia Stakes meeting this weekend, in Sydney the Canterbury Classic 2013 will also be taking place under the lights.

Eleven horses are nominated for this year’s edition of the $100,000 Listed Canterbury Classic (1100m) including two of the stables of Peter Snowden.

Snowden has entered his stakes winning Lonhro seven-year-old Skytrain and a younger son of Lonhro, three-year-old Sessions

Skytrain was last seen running a devastatingly close third when beaten only a long neck by No Looking Back in the Listed Carrington Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on New Year’s Day and has also been nominated for Friday night’s $220,000 Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) in Melbourne.

Sessions meanwhile has had just five starts to date finishing top three in all including three wins, the most recent of which was over 1000m at Warwick Farm in a Benchmark 80 handicap on January 5.

The notoriously boisterious colt jumped favourite in his previous start bad manners and a tendency to pull during his races saw them finish second.

The highest-rated Canterbury Classic nominee meanwhile is the Rick Worthington-trained Whitefriars, the veteran Arena seven-year-old having had just one run in the past two years.

In the summer of 2011 the gelding won the Australia Stakes on this night at the Valley in the final stride but injury setbacks saw them spend the next 22 months on the sidelines.

They resumed at Warwick Farm on December 22 with a credible eighth to Adebisi in the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) before an eye-catching barrier trial win back at the track on January 15.

Other notable entries include Kris Lees’ Group 1 performer Uate coming off a third in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes, the Matthew Dale-trained Canberra galloper Unanimously who was also placed in a Listed feature last time out but back in August, and fellow Canberra visitor Zaratone who was second in the Carrington Stakes before a disappointing eighth in the Takeover Target Stakes.
