Veteran former Hong Kong champ Good Ba Ba could get their chance to add an eighth Group 1 title to their incredible career record as they head towards the Doncaster Mile 2013 this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.
Having their maiden campaign down under the Lear Fan 11-year-old was raced in Hong Kong from 2005 until midway through 2011 winning no less than seven Group 1 features.
They were bought out of retirement late last year and sent to Rick Hore-Lacy in Melbourne to begin a new chapter of their career racing in Australia.
After a fourth on debut here on New Year’s Day behind Adamantium in the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m), Good Ba Ba ran another good fourth second-up over the weekend.
Beaten five lengths first-up, in the $120,000 Listed Kensington Stakes (1000m) on Saturday the gallant old warhorse ran on strongly to finish less than two and a half lengths off the winner First Command who also won the race 12 months ago.
With the sharp 1000m of the Kensington far from Good Ba Ba’s preferred distance, Hore-Lacy took a lot from the run is confident they will improve through the autumn as they are stepped up gradually to the mile.
Their major target will be the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick on April 20.
Current pre-field Doncaster Mile odds at the online bookies are led by Gai Waterhouse’s crack colt Pierro and Black Caviar’s boom half-brother All Too Hard.
Good Ba Ba meanwhile is located much further down the Doncaster Mile betting markets at a quote of around $67.
They will race next-up in the $150,000 Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield on February 9 before the Doncaster serves as a likely swansong race for the old champion.
“That’s the one that’s going to suit him best,” Hore-Lacy said of the Doncaster Mile 2013.
“That’s his distance and that’s the direction he’s shown he’s best at.”
