2013 Oakleigh Plate Target for Kensington Stakes Winner First Command

Anthony Freedman’s always honest seven-year-old First Command kept their good new year form going with another victory in the Kensington Stakes successfully defending their title in the Flemington feature and earning a look in for the upcoming Oakleigh Plate 2013.

First Command successful defended their title in the Kensington Stakes 2013

The Commands gelding enjoyed a second-up victory in the $125,000 Listed Kensington Stakes (1000m) 12 months ago and it was the same summer success on Saturday.

After resuming with a nice win at Caulfield on January 5 First Command, ridden by Glen Boss, saluted for the punters on the weekend as the $1.65 favourite carried the 59kg top-weight to a good three quarter length victory over light-weight Light Express ($8.50).

Two lengths off the winner in third was then Belfast Boy in the small six-horse field.

Last Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival First Command backed up from their Kensington Stakes victory to finish second to Eagle Falls in the Group 3 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) before a brave fourth when defeated only half a length by Brisbane raider Woorim in the $400,000 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m).

While originally not planning to target the Group 1 feature at Caulfield with the ageing sprinter again this year, Freedman may have been persuaded by Boss that First Command should be considered for the Oakleigh on February 23.

“He’s seven year’s old now and he’d have to carry a bit of weight,” Freedman explained.

But Boss said they had it in them.

“You could probably raise the bar again,” he told Freedman.

“If there’d been another 200 metres he’d have won even easier.”

Whether they go to the Oakeligh or not First Command will be given the chance to become a million dollar earner in the autumn – their current career earnings sitting at $929,690 from 31 starts.

“I’d like to get him past the $1 million mark, which he deserves,” Freedman said.
