Proisir a Chance for 2013 Randwick Guineas

While the autumn campaigns for a number of her other stable stars are set in stone, Gai Waterhouse is still tossing up plans for smart colt Proisir who she says is a chance for the Randwick Guineas 2013 in March.

This week Waterhouse confirmed assignments for the likes of Rosehill Guineas winner Laser Hawk (Ranvet Stakes – Doncaster – Queen Elizabeth Stakes), reigning Doncaster hero More Joyous (Canterbury Stakes – Queen of the Turf Stakes – Doncaster – Queen Elizabeth) and 2YO Triple Crown champ Pierro (Newmarket Handicap).

Lonhro colt Pierro, last seen running a brave third in the Cox Plate, will also head towards the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival’s $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick on April 20 where they have opened co-favourite in the early markets with fellow boom three-year-old All Too Hard.

Another Waterhouse-trained youngster high up the future Doncaster Mile betting markets is then Proisir who is likely to get things underway for the season in the $500,000 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) held this year at Warwick Farm on March 16.

The Choisir colt won their opening three career starts last year including an impressive six length effort at Newcastle in the Group 3 Spring Stakes over the mile.

They went to Randwick next start but suffered a shock loss as the odds-on favourite in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) when second to It’s A Dundeel.

Waterhouse gave them a very tough assignment in just their fifth career start with Proisir sent to Moonee Valley for the $3 million Cox Plate where they finished a credible eighth to champion four-year-old Ocean Park.

They are now gearing up for their 2013 return where Waterhouse will likely keep them racing against their own age before a possible Doncaster Mile bid.

“I am yet to sit down and discuss a preparation with his owners but I think it would be suitable for him to stay on the traditional path to start with and head towards the Randwick Guineas,” Waterhouse said.
