Darley veteran Pinwheel has trialled positively at Werribee this morning and appears set to make an early autumn start next Friday night in the Group 2 2013 Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.
The seven-year-old thrives in work and spent just 2 1/2 weeks in the paddock following his solid fourth to Barakey in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot on November 24.
“He had about 2 1/2 weeks in the paddock when we got him back from Perth,” Trainer Peter Snowden’s son Paul said.
“He doesn’t take much work to get up this horse. Hopefully we can get him up for next Friday night.”
A son of champion Lonhro, Pinwheel was given a testing hit-out this morning with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle, leaving Snowden confident he can make it to the start line on Friday.
“He went quite well. We’ll nominate next Friday night and see what happens,” Snowden told Sky Sports Radio.
“Around the valley he’s going to have to be pretty sharp but he hit the line well this morning.”
Pinwheel is one of the stable favourites and is coming off a spring campaign that showed retirement is not in his immediate future.
Apart from the fourth at Group 1 level in the Winterbottom, he won two races in the Group 3 Missile Stakes and the Group 2 Warwick Stakes.
The tough galloper has had an outstanding racing career to date, winning 12 of 36 starts and collecting $1.1 million in prizemoney.
The plan for the rest of the autumn is not yet known for Pinwheel but is likely to feature a number of targets at both the 2013 Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival as well as the 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
