Melbourne racing fans appear likely to again see star colt Pierro in the flesh with trainer Gai Waterhouse suggesting he could run first-up in the Group 1 2013 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 9.
Waterhouse has revealed the three-year-old is “not far away from trialling” and is pleased with his condition ahead of a campaign that is likely to be geared towards the 2013 Doncaster Mile.
“The Newmarket would be a great race down the straight and then he could come back to Sydney and head towards the Doncaster,” Waterhouse told News Limited.
The Randwick trainer said she is “delighted” with how Pierro has come back following a strong spring campaign which saw his unbeaten run end but still place twice at Group 1 level.
The son of Lonhro had his undefeated streak end in the ninth start of his career when the Patinack-owned All Too Hard bolted home to run over the top of him in the Caulfield Guineas.
He then backed up two weeks later in the Cox Plate where he finished third behind Ocean Park and All Too Hard.
The Golden Slipper winner has a remarkable early career record, having won eight times from 10 starts and has already collected more than $3.5 million in prizemoney.
Pierro was bought for $230,000 at the 2011 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, proving a lucrative investment for owner Greg Kolivos.
Likely to join Pierro in the Doncaster is stablemate Laser Hawk who produced an excellent trial performance at Randwick on Thursday.
The 2012 Rosehill Guineas winner missed the spring due to injury but showed no signs of the problem as he heads towards some big spring targets including the Group 1 2013 Ranvet Stakes and the 2013 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
