Undefeated Perth speedster Barakey is set to trial at home in WA this Monday where punters will get the chance to gauge their fitness ahead of their raid on the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival where they will target the Oakleigh Plate 2013 first-up.
The Jim Taylor-trained Key Business five-year-old is lightly raced with just 11 starts to date not having raced in their two-year-old season.
Their record since debuting at Belmont Park in June of 2011 however is outstanding with Barakey yet to taste defeat.
The genuine sprint star is a triple stakes winner and, thanks to their last start effort in Ascot back in November, a Group 1 winner.
After an outstanding four length victory in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) on November 6, their first Group assignment, Barakey backed up 18 days later and scored an elite level trophy in the Winterbottom Stakes over the 1200m.
Connections are now ready to plunder the richest on offer across the country during the Melbourne Festival of Racing with one of their big autumn aims having been named as the $400,000 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield Racecourse on February 23.
Barakey is also expected to be among the nominations taken for this year’s prestigious $1 million Group 1 Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington Racecourse on March 9 when early entries close this coming Tuesday, January 22.
But first they must get back to the business of racing with a Belmont Park trial on Monday where they will face off against five other gallopers including three fellow Taylor-trained gallopers which will make for an easy first jumpout where they will be blinkers-free.
“He’ll have a trial over 1000 metres at Belmont on Monday, he’ll have another one on Monday week and then he’ll be ready to race,” Taylor confirmed.
“But if everything keeps going the way it is at the moment, he’ll run first up in the Oakleigh Plate.
“I have only just got back from two-and-a-half weeks off and he looked good when I got back home.”
Another Perth champion heading towards the 2013 Newmarket Handicap is then Gino Poletti’s dual Group 1 winner Luckygray who will go to the feature first-up.
