Bjorn Baker’s promising young Snippetson colt Fuerza is well fancied to break their maiden status when they race for just the second time in Saturday’s Inglis Classic 2013 at Rosehill Gardens opening favourite for the rich restricted event.
A $32,000 buy from last year’s Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale, Fuerza debuted at Warwick Farm on December 22 and ran a very brave second when defeated just a long neck by stablemate Twilight Royale in the Inglis Nursery Stakes (1000m).
Former New Zealander Baker, who has been established in Sydney for the past 18 months, was unable to take Twilight Royale into the $250,000 Inglis Classic (1200m) this weekend as they were purchased from the Melbourne Sales.
Still he is hoping Fuerza, who goes into the race on the back of a second in a 900m Rosehill trial on January 8, can get the job done.
The bookies certainly believe they are the one to beat with the youngster, drawn in gate seven with James McDonald to ride, with Fuerza the $2.90 favourite in the early Inglis Classic odds.
Baker will also be represented in Saturday’s race by Awarewolf who is a $21 outsider in the betting after their horror barrier 18 draw.
Despite the juvenile’s feature drawing a bumper field of 14 starters plus four emergencies there are only three other hopefuls at single figures to win.
The other horses under $10 in the Inglis Classic betting markets are then:
- #10 Devil In A Dress ($5) – Kris Lees-trained Strada filly won by 2.5 lengths in their debut at Scone back on December 29, showed they were still fit with a trial win over 800m at Wyong this month and looks right to handle the step up to city class and the 1200m
- #7 Marseille Roulette ($5.50) – Nicely bred Zizou colt debuts for trainer Gai Waterhouse here, won a short 740m trial at Randwick on January 4 but needs to improve on that to get this distance first-up in a big field
- #3 Direct Charge ($9) – Drawn ideally in gate four with Glyn Schofield to ride, Robbie Laing’s Charge Forward colt won the Group 3 HKJC Maribyrnong Plate at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day but bummed out in a bad ride from Steve Arnold when resuming at Warwick Farm this month, will improve
Other longer-priced chances that have claims for an upset on Saturday then include Choisir colt Standard Bearer ($10) who has run fourth in their past two runs, the rails-drawn Strada filly Sweet Kiss ($13) who was third in the Inglis Nursery and the Harold Norman-trained Gold Coast visitor Cannyzing ($15) coming off a big three length victory at Eagle Farm from last Saturday.
