Star colt All Too Hard could take on the older horses in the Group 1 2013 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) as a prelude to the 2013 Australian Guineas and a trip to the 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
Team Hawkes are remaining coy on the exact schedule for the Caulfield Guineas winner, suggesting jumpouts over the next couple of weeks will determine whether he kicks off his campaign in the Listed 2013 Manfred Stakes (1200m) or the Orr Stakes the following weekend.
“He’ll be ready at the end of the month,” co-trainer John Hawkes told Radio Sports National.
“Whether that be the Manfred or the Orr, the next couple of weeks will tell.”
Both races take place at Caulfield and Hawkes is confident if All Too Hard does line up in the Orr Stakes he is capable of knocking off the older horses.
“They’re still reasonably well off with their weight and, the older horses, sometimes they’re easier to beat than what it is in your own age bracket,” Hawkes said.
While Hawkes is not yet committed to a full plan, he hinted the Group 1 2013 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 2 would be his major Melbourne goal before heading to Sydney for events such as the Group 1 2013 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and the Group 1 2013 George Ryder Stakes (1500m).
“Possibly the Australian Guineas and then we’ll head to Sydney,” he said.
“Whether it be the Ranvet or the Ryder, those types of races, nothing’s set in concrete…we’re just taking it race by race.”
The three-year-old was one of the shining lights of the Spring Carnival, ending Pierro’s unbeaten reign when running him down to take the Caulfield Guineas and finishing runner-up to New Zealand star Ocean Park in the Cox Plate.
