Devil In A Dress Wears Blinkers for Inglis Classic 2013

In an attempt to keep his filly’s undefeated record intact on Saturday Broadmeadow trainer Kris Lees will add blinkers to the gear of Devil In A Dress when she races for just the second time in the 2013 Inglis Classic at Rosehill Racecourse.

The daughter of Strada, a $30,000 purchase from last year’s Inglis Classic sales, is yet to taste defeat either under race conditions or in her trials and Lees hopes she can step it up and keep the good form going in Saturday’s $250,000 Inglis Classic (1200m).

Drawn in gate 11 in the capacity 14 starter plus four emergency Inglis Classic 2013 field Devil In A Dress is one of just five hopefuls in the mix with a previous career win to their name.

After an impressive three length barrier trial win over 800m at Newcastle in early December the filly went to the races for the first time on December 29 at Scone and replicated the form from her trial with a good 2.5 length effort over 1000m.

She retained her fitness on January 8 when trialed again over 800m this time at Wyong where she won by 2.5 as well, a performance that boosted Lees’ confidence for her next run.

It will be a much tougher assignment in Sydney this weekend however with the Inglis Classic drawing plenty of young talent including Inglis Nursery runner-up Fuerza and Group 3 Melbourne Cup Carnival winner Direct Charge.

“Often it is a race where there is a limited amount of chances but it looks a bit stronger this year than most,” Lees said.

Still Lees hopes Devil In A Dress can step up to the challenge and that wearing blinkers, as she did for her Wyong trial, in the Classic will help keep her sharp.

“It was a few weeks between runs and I just thought she did a few things wrong at her only race start so we trialled her in blinkers and she responded pretty well,” Lees said.

“She was racing a bit all over the place and she went a lot straighter with the blinkers.

“She has plenty of upside and is an improving type.”
