Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Gary Portelli’s unbeaten colt Rebel Dane showed they were ready to continue their good form this autumn with a winning trial at Warwick Farm on Tuesday morning.
The California Dane three-year-old boasts three wins from as many starts in Sydney last spring and looks on track to keep the winning streak going when they return this autumn.
They debuted at Canterbury on September 26 with a tight win over Knight Exemplar in a 1250m maiden plate before stepping it up at Rosehill 17 days later taking out a Benchmark 70 over 1400m by an impressive 2.5 lengths.
Most recently they ran at Rosehill again this time carrying 59kg to victory in the Inghams Love’Em 3YO BM 72 (1300m) on October 27, Portelli confident the formlines from their opening prep will hold up.
“His maiden preparation was outstanding,” Portelli said.
“The formlines are strong, there have been plenty of winners out of the races. I think about six or seven winners have come out of that maiden.
“The third one was the win which showed his class.
“He had 59kg on his back, got poleaxed at the 250m mark, lost momentum as the second horse had already gone for home but he picked himself up.
“It was testament to his courage.”
Tuesday saw the promising youngster trial for the first time in 2013, Rebel Dane putting an easy three lengths on the Craig Ritchie-trained As You Did in an 800m hit out winning in a sharp 45.80 seconds the third fastest of the morning.
Portelli has high hopes for Rebel Dane who he will step up to stakes company this time in with the $175,000 Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm on February 16 on the agenda.
“He’s been back about 10 weeks,” Portelli said.
“He’ll have the one trial and there is an 1100m race for him two weeks later.
“If he races well enough in the restricted race at Rosehill then he will be second up in the Royal Sovereign.
“We’ll try and win another race, get the BOBS money up and the rest is a bonus if we can handle the quality.”
