Top Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman could have the chance to win another Group 1 this autumn aboard talented Melbourne filly Norzita with connections hoping the hoop will be available for the Flight Stakes winner’s upcoming preparation.
Norzita, a daughter of Thorn Park out of Quest For Fame mare Visique, has won two of her six career starts to date the most notable of which was her last start victory by an easy 2.5 lengths in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick in early October last year.
The promising Bart Cummings-trained three-year-old was ridden by Bowman for the first time that run and her owners will be offering him the opportunity to reunite with the filly when she returns this season.
After missing the spring, spelled having reached the end of her preparation, Norzita is tipped to resume racing under the lights at Moonee Valley in late February before her first major assignment in the $220,000 Group 2 A.V. Kewney Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Super Saturday March 9.
“She went from a maiden through to winning a Group One race in her first preparation but it would have been too much to stretch her out to Melbourne,” Duncan Ramage, racing manager for co-owner Dato Tan Chin Nam, said.
“Basically it would have been a bridge too far if we wanted to have a fresh three-year-old for the fillies races in the autumn.”
The Kewney Stakes does however fall on the same Saturday as Sydney’s Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes meeting meaning Bowman may not be open to the Norzita ride in Melbourne over turning down an elite level run in his home state.
“At the moment we are waiting to see what Hugh Bowman is doing,” Ramage said.
“Hugh won a Group One on her at her last start so he has been given the first opportunity to ride her again.
“The program leading into a race like the Kewney is too good to pass up.”
Still he could continue his association with her when after her two runs in Melbourne Norzita targets the riches of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival 2013.
Her exact autumn campaign in Sydney is yet to be established but Cummings has confirmed that Norzita will be nominated for the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Royal Randwick on April 20 when nominations for the classic close on Tuesday morning.
“She will have only two starts in Melbourne but a program hasn’t been finalised for Sydney,” Ramage said.
