Triple Elegance Earns Stradbroke Handicap 2013 Target

After breaking a winning drought of nearly two years with their smart victory in the Magic Millions Cup over the weekend, the Chris Waller-trained Triple Elegance could be on way to the 2013 Stradbroke Handicap this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Magic Millions Cup winner Triple Elegance will head towards the Stradbroke Handicap 2013 this winter

Until Saturday’s Gold Coast meeting the Mossman gelding hadn’t won a race since the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) in Sydney back in March of 2011.

A month later they were third to stablemate Rangirangdoo in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) but a bog track next start saw them fail to finish better than 14th to Sacred Choice when tested in that year’s Doncaster Mile.

Triple Elegance had been racing below par ever since but improved leaps and bounds when putting a length on Gundy Son to win the $400,000 Magic Millions Cup (1400m), a huge form turnaround from their lead-up 11th to All Legal in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) on December 22.

“Different surroundings and the trip away from home has done him the world of good,” Waller’s stable manager Liam Prior said after Saturday’s success.

“Although it (the MM Cup) was a bit of an afterthought the race had good prize money and he was obviously qualified.”

Waller is hoping they will continue to race the way they did in the Cup and is aiming high this coming winter with Queensland’s richest race, the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm Racecourse on June 8, 2013.

Triple Elegance contested last year’s Stradbroke Handicap but failed to impress when finishing 10 lengths away 16th to the Peter Moody-trained winner Mid Summer Music beating home just two rivals, an effort Prior is confident they can improve on in 2013.

“We tried him in the Stradbroke last year but I think getting a win back on the board will help build his confidence levels,” Prior said.

“We’ve tried different things with gear adjustments and a change of riders and it’s all come together for him.

“Usually with horses like this when they have a kill they can go on to better things so hopefully that will be the case again.”

Stay tuned to for all the upcoming autumn and winter racing carnival updates including those on the Stradbroke Handicap.
