Perth Cup winner Talent Show will be given the chance to score a rare “cups double” when he contests the $400,000 Group 2 2013 Adelaide Cup (3200m) on March 11.
The upset Perth Cup win was the first stakes win of the mare’s career and have left trainer Graeme Ballantyne confident it is worth making the trip east to chase more success.
The six-year-old had a week’s break following the Perth Cup and Ballantyne has mapped out a program that will give her a gradual build-up to the genuine staying test the 3200m Adelaide feature provides.
She will run in the 2013 Detonator Stakes (1800m) at Ascot on February 16 before travelling to Adelaide to contest common Adelaide Cup lead-up the 2013 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m).
The daughter of Jeune carried just 53.5kg in her Perth Cup win and Ballantyne is hoping the handicapper gives her a favourable weight at Morphetville to maximise her winning chances.
“Hopefully she gets into the Adelaide Cup just above the minimum weight,” Ballantyne told the West Australian.
Jarrod Noske, who once rode super mare Black Caviar, was aboard Talent Show in the Perth Cup and Ballantyne confirmed he is the first choice rider for the upcoming Adelaide campaign.
“He’s only ridden her twice, but there’s no reason he wouldn’t ride her,” Ballantyne said.
The Lark Hill-based mare will be out to improve on the performance of last year’s Perth Cup winner Western Jewel who finished unplaced in Adelaide.
Also likely to make a trip to the Adelaide Cup is Ballarat gelding Tuscan Fire who has recently produced two dominant victories at Flemington over distances of 2000m and 2500m.
