Darley colt Albrecht faces a daunting showdown with Caulfield Guineas winner All Too Hard in the Group 1 2013 Australian Guineas at Flemington on March 2.
Trainer Peter Snowden has confirmed the consistent galloper will be aimed at the three-year-old feature after contesting lead-up races the Listed 2013 Manfred Stakes (1200m) on February 2 and the Group 3 2013 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) on February 16.
Albrecht will have his first public hit-out since the spring when he trials in Melbourne on January 25.
The three-year-old is yet to miss a place from five career starts and has two wins to his name including at Group 3 level in the Up And Coming Stakes at Warwick Farm last August.
The Redoute’s Choice colt went within a neck of claiming Group 1 honours in the Golden Rose when he was defeated by stablemate Epaulette.
While Albrecht’s spring plan is clearly mapped out, Snowden is still unsure where Epaulette will head, saying he is a “month behind” due to a minor setback.
“I’m just not sure where he starts now. It won’t be early,” Snowden said.
Epaulette was not among the top fancies in the Golden Rose but flew down the outside to score his first Group 1 win and was a consistent performer all spring.
Prior to the Golden Rose he finished third in the Group 3 Run To The Rose and also got his chance in Melbourne where he won the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude and finished third behind All Too Hard and Pierro in the Caulfield Guineas.
Given the setback, if Epaulette makes it to Melbourne this autumn his role is likely to be minor with later races at the 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival more realistic targets.
