Despite his impressive end to 2012, eight-year-old stayer Alcopop has been retired from racing.
The Jeune gelding was in his best form last spring, placing a close second in the $2.6 million Caulfield Cup before winning the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes in his next start.
His final career run came in the Group 1 Hong Kong Cup, where he finished an admirable third in what was his first overseas race start.
Trainer Jake Stephens feels that retiring Alcopop while he is at his best is the best decision for the horse and his legacy.
“It was going to be a long spell for him anyway,” Stephens said.
“He’s not getting any younger and he’s nice and sound at the moment considering the problems he’s had, so it’s just a nice way to retire him on the back of what he’s done over the spring and in Hong Kong.
“He’s done so much for us that it’s a fitting way for him to go out. We just want to make sure he has a nice retirement.”
“I don’t really want to flog him around as an older horse.”
Alcopop has won 10 of his 34 career wins and has earned close to $2 million in prize money.
The galloper will now possibly move his speciality from thoroughbred racing to dressage and show jumping with the help of Stephens’ wife Harriet.
