2013 Kensington Stakes Nominations Released

This weekend the big stakes race in Victoria will be Flemington’s Kensington Stakes 2013, early nominations for which have now been released.

First Command

First Command will defend their title in the 2013 Kensington Stakes this Saturday

There are currently 10 sprinters entered for this year’s edition of the $120,000 Listed Kensington Stakes (1000m) down the Flemington straight six with nominations extended until 10:00am (local time) on Tuesday.

The top-rated Kensington Stakes nominee as the entries stand is the now Rick Hore-Lacy-trained Good Ba Ba, a former seven time Group 1 international champ who hails from Hong Kong.

The veteran 11-year-old debuted down under for Hore-Lacy on New Year’s Day when a credible fourth to Adamantium in the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) and while the Kensington will be a little short for them, their trainer is confident they will still put in an eye-catching run.

Among Good Ba Ba’s most notable rivals is the defending Kensington Stakes winner First Command, the Anthony Freedman-trained seven-year-old after their second win on the trot this time in.

First Command won their first race since last year’s Kensington first-up on January 5 when Glen Boss guided them to a smart one and a quarter length victory over eight-year-old Oamaru Force gelding Rocking Force, also set to back up on Saturday, over 1000m at Caulfield, connections hoping they are that sharp again on Saturday.

Other last start winners nominated for the Kensington this weekend are the Gordon Richards-trained Bel Esprit five-year-old Belfast Boy from Morphettville who won at this track and distance on New Year’s Day, and fellow interstate raider Excelorada.

Neville Parnham’s visiting Perth galloper Excelorada has won their past three races consecutively, the Exceed And Excel gelding a specialist over the 1000m.

Their last three victories have all been over the distance back home in Ascot including their big two length effort on January 1 in the Listed Summer Scorcher.

See below for the first Kensington Stakes 2013 nominations with any late entries to be published on Tuesday.
