Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This Sunday, January 20, the action of the AAMI Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival official kicks off with the running of the Hobart Guineas 2013.
Nominations for this year’s edition of the $90,000 Eastlands Hobart Guineas (2100m) have been extended until Tuesday morning but the early entries feature 10 promising three-year-olds.
One of the more notable Hobart Guineas hopefuls this year is the Gary White-trained Clangalang gelding Alarmist who broke their maiden status when stepped up to 1400m at career start number four on the weekend.
Alarmist, ridden by Darren Gauci, relished the extra distance putting four lengths on Cerise Sauvage in the Clark Industrial Park Plate at Hobart in an impressive win that saw them draw well clear of the field over the final 200m.
“Inside the last 200 he was pretty exciting to watch,” Gauci said after their Sunday win.
They are now nominated to back up seven days later where White believes they will thrive again stepping right up to the 2100m of the Guineas.
“He’ll move onto the Guineas now which is what we wanted to use this race for so it’s all worked out well,” Gauci said.
“I’m very excited.”
White has also nominated Ollie’s Gold on Sunday, the Promontory Gold gelding another last start winner over the 1400m at Hobart from January 13 after their narrow victory over Angel Child in the third.
Ollie’s Gold has won two of their six starts to date, their only unplaced effort being their disappointing ninth to Mister John two back when beaten 10 lengths in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m).
Two horses that put in far more impressive Tasmanian Guineas efforts that will look to improve again in the Hobart edition are then the Darren Kenny-trained Kenjorwood and David & Scott Brunton’s What Life Brings who finished second and third respectively.
Nicely bred Snippertson gelding Kenjorwood boasts an impressive record in black type company already having run third in last summer’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic, a close second in the Listed Gold Sovereign Stakes (1200m) and they have interstate experience after finishing eighth to All Too Hard in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Flemington last March.
What Life Brings meanwhile has finished top three in five of their six starts so far, the Savoire Vivre gelding looking for just their second career win after a first-up victory at Launceston in the Supervobis TAS Plate in November.
Another notable Hobart Guineas nominees in 2013 is also the Troy Blacker-trained Keukenhof who won by 4.5 lengths at Longford on New Year’s Day.
