Moriarty Wins 2013 Gosford Cup – Results

A swooping finish from Chris Waller-trained gelding was enough to see him justify his short-priced favouritism and win the Listed 2013 Gosford Gold Cup (2000m) on Thursday.

Moriarty has justified his short price to win the Gosford Cup

With Hugh Bowman aboard, the five-year-old was held towards the back of the field for much of the run before peeling to the outside and rounding up his rivals for a half-length win from Reuben Percival and Travolta.

It was the second consecutive stakes win for the Irish-bred import who took out the Listed Tattersalls Club Cup at Rosehill on New Year’s Day.

Bowman picked up the ride in the absence of the injured Corey Brown and executed the instructions of Waller to perfection.

“I was told to hold him up for one run and that’s what I did,” Bowman said.

The top Sydney rider said Moriarty “deserved” the victory on the back of consistent results throughout this preparation.

“He’s been racing consistently and broke through last start and I’m just lucky to pick up the ride today,” he said.

With Waller at the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions sale, stable foreman Peter Muscutt was trackside to witness Moriarty’s seventh win from 24 starts.

Muscutt said it is now clear that trips around the 2000m mark are ideal for the son of Clodovil as it best allows him to show his turn of foot at the business end of the race.

“He’s come a long way this preparation and the drop back in distance in his past couple of starts has done the trick,” Muscutt said.

It was an impressive first-up performance from Reuben Percival to grab second after he was last seen running second in the Listed Sandown Cup in November.

Magic Millions action takes place at the Gold Coast this weekend and the best place to back a winner is bookmaker.com.au.
