Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
It may have been 11 months between wins for David Hayes’ veteran galloper Eagle Falls but both their trainer and the bookies are tipping the drought to break this Saturday when the seven-year-old speedster jumps favourite in the Magic Millions Sprint 2013 on the Gold Coast.
The son of Hussonet, Group 1 winner of the 2011 Oakleigh Plate, was last seen in the winners’ stall back in February of last year when they scored an impressive first-up victory in the Group 3 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield as a $20 roughie.
They have been well beaten in their eight subsequent runs finishing sixth or worse including their dead last finish failing to beat home any of their 16 rivals when unsuccessfully defending their Oakleigh Plate title last autumn.
Not having raced since their distant 11th to Sea Lord in the Listed Chandler McLeod Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on September 15 Eagle Falls returns to the track on Saturday for the $176,000 Myer Magic Millions Sprint (1000m) which will be their maiden run in Queensland.
While they have been out of form of late and have the 60kg top-weight to overcome Eagle Falls, drawn in barrier four with Chad Schofield in the saddle, is top fancy in the Magic Millions Sprint odds at a quote of $3 with Hayes confident they are deserving of the price.
“The 60kg doesn’t matter over that distance but he’s well in as a Group I winner giving only 6kg to horses that don’t have his record,” Hayes said.
“He’s got a good barrier and we think he can win.”
Following Eagle Falls in the Magic Millions Sprint 2013 markets are then three other single figure fancies with:
- #2 Doubtful Jack ($5.50) – Peter Moody-trained six-year-old has been out of action since their failed effort in the Winter Champion Final at Flemington back in July, another galloper out to break a lengthy loosing spell not having won since October of 2011, good first-up record but could be too sharp for him over this distance
- #3 Craiglea Falcon ($8.50) – Early market mover with recent money coming in for this Gympie galloper, racing well in Brisbane when they come to town and has good form over the 1100m when they last raced it at Mackay back in May
- #6 Leealan ($8.50) – Local Sequalo four-year-old resuming off an eight month break, track and distance both ideal, won their first three last time in at the Gold Coast over 900 – 1100m so is a specialist here and could be hard to hold out fresh, could be a late jockey change however with Blake Shinn in doubt
Double-figure chances that could prove the value bet of the Magic Millions Sprint this year meanwhile then include the likes of John O’Shea’s Sydney visitor Number One Gun ($11), the consistent Tony Gollan-trained Rocket To Glory ($12) and Gillian Heinrich’s local Danzero gelding Confident Star ($14).
