An few extra strings in Missy Longstocking’s bow could be the key to her unlocking victory in the $2 million 2013 Magic Millions Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
The Liam Birchley-trained filly is third favourite at $8 to win the juvenile feature but jockey Damian Browne believes she has one crucial advantage over top fancies Assail and Clevadude.
The two favourites have both shown that they like to race on pace but Queenslander Missy Longstocking showed in her BJ McLachlan Stakes win that she has versatility.
On that occasion Browne tucked her away midfield and she duly responded to race calmly before exploding at the finish to claim a 1 1/2 length victory over Sweet Idea.
“This filly has a lot more versatility because you can position her in a race and thankfully she can adapt to any situation,” Browne said.
All things are going well for the unbeaten youngster who received a favourable barrier five position at the draw on Surfers Paradise beach on Tuesday.
Browne said from the position he should be able to settle Missy Longstocking fifth or sixth before allowing her to come into her own in the straight.
Birchley believes Missy Longstocking has improved following the BJ McLachlan Stakes win and should be at her peak on Saturday.
The talented filly has shown herself to be a top Magic Millions contender since her debut in October when she hammered her rivals by six lengths in Toowoomba.
She then went to Brisbane to hand out a seven-length walloping and has since won twice at stakes level in the Calaway Gal Stakes and the BJ McLachlan.
