Melbourne Cup-winning owner Lloyd Williams has added another import to his arsenal of classy stayers with the purchase of British entire Sea Moon.
The sale was confirmed by Williams yesterday and there is potential he could race at the 2013 Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival in a race such as the Group 1 2013 Australian Cup.
Sea Moon has had 10 starts for five wins with the biggest victory of his career coming in June when he defeated 2011 Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden by 3 1/2 lengths to claim the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes (2400m).
Also in that race was 2011 Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux and 2012 placegetters Fiorente and Jakkalberry.
Other significant results include winning the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes (2400m) at York by nearly eight lengths ahead of Al Kazeem and fellow Williams-owned galloper Seville and a tight victory in the Listed Tapster Stakes.
The son of Beat Hollow travelled to the USA in November 2011 where he ran second in the Group 1 Breeders’ Cup at Chruchill Downs and finished eighth in this year’s Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe in France.
He was down to race in the Hong Kong Vase in September but was withdrawn on the eve of the race.
The addition of Sea Moon further strengthens Williams’ impressive team of horses that is headed by 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon.
Williams has previously stated that Green Moon is unlikely to defend his Melbourne Cup title which could open the door for Sea Moon to head his brigade in Australia’s biggest race come spring time.
The prominent owner has won four Melbourne Cups with Just A Dash (1981), What A Nuisance (1985), Efficient (2007) and of course Green Moon.
