In-form gelding British General is a short-priced favourite to score the first stakes win of his career in the Listed 2013 Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) at Flemington this Saturday.
The General Nediym five-year-old is a $2.60 favourite at bookmaker.com.au to add a third straight Flemington win to this resume.
Lightly raced for six wins from just 10 starts, the Dan O’Sullivan-trained galloper has been in top form recently, winning the Dorevitch Pathology Handicap (1410m) on December 15 and backing that up to take out the George Watson Handicap (1400m) on New Year’s Day.
O’Sullivan had originally planned to keep him for an easier race on Saturday week but believes his form and condition mean he can continue his run this weekend.
“I was going to take an easier path with him and run him in a 0-89 the following week but I just thought if everything went alright we’d go down this path,” O’Sullivan said.
No horse comes close to the favourite in betting, with Dash For Viz, Future Solution and Under The Eiffel all sharing the second line of betting at $8.
Dash For Viz was second to British General in the George Watson Handicap while Future Solution will be out to score a second straight win after winning the Spotless Plate at Flemington on December 22.
Under The Eiffel is one of two Tony Vasil-trained chances in the field, with the other being the stakes-placed Veewap ($13).
Out to turn some indifferent form around are Orbit Express ($9), Big Buddie ($12), Gold Sand ($12) and By The Way while the Peter Moody-trained Cosmic Causeway ($26) is the outsider along with veteran Rockpecker ($26).
