Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Mick Burles’ in-form five-year-old The Cleaner has opened the clear cut favourite to take out this afternoon’s Devonport Cup 2013 in Tasmanian.
The Savoire Vivre gelding is one of 14 hopefuls in the mix for this year’s $100,000 Devonport Cup (1880m), The Cleaner out for their third win on the trot.
Due to jump from barrier seven as the 60kg top-weight with Jason Maskiell retaining the ride The Cleaner is well supported to remain unbeaten this time in paying $2.25 as the Devonport Cup betting favourite.
After a devastating four length victory over Geegees Blackflash first-up in the Listed Tasmanian Stakes (1600m) The Cleaner won again beating the same horse at Launceston over the mile on January 2.
In a three horse betting race just two other hopefuls are under double figures in the current Devonport Cup odds with Catwen Boy ($5) and Fieldmaster ($5.50).
Mark Ganderton’s Catbird six-year-old Catwen Boy, second to Dream Flyer in this race 12 months ago, is also a last-start winner having taken out the Sheffield Cup by a narrow margin on the synthetic Davenport track on Boxing Day.
Victorian raider Fieldmaster meanwhile will look to continue their good record when travelling first-up when they race for the first time since June.
They have a smart record in Tasmania having spent a month there last season which included a win in the $50,000 Jockey Club Cup at Elwick, former jockey turned trainer Patrick Payne upbeat about their chances today as they again head towards the AAMI Hobart and Launceston Cups in February.
“This is an ideal race to start his campaign and because he has a very good first-up record I rate him a good chance in the race,” Payne said.
“Obviously The Cleaner has the form on the board and will probably be the one to beat but I’m more than happy with my horse’s condition going into the race and the synthetic track shouldn’t present a problem.”
Other notable horses at longer prices then include Sheffield Cup runner-up Jakcorijim ($13), the David & Scott Brunton-trained Viking Ruler eight-year-old Naadji ($17) coming off a second in the Longford Cup and Makes Cents ($19) who was third in the Sheffield Cup last start.
