Glamour colt Pierro is back in work and thriving ahead of the 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival where he is likely to be aimed at a number of big Group 1 features.
The Golden Slipper winner has pleased staff within the Waterhouse camp who are busy preparing him for a campaign that will take place predominantly, if not completely, in Sydney.
“He’s been back in Gai’s stable for two and a half, nearly three weeks now,” Owner Greg Kolivos told Sky Sports Radio.
“All the guys in the team that have either ridden him or are looking after him are thrilled with how he is.”
The star colt was one of the autumn stars last year, winning the two-year-old triple crown, and while his exact autumn plan isn’t set in stone, Kolivos confirmed he will be chasing glory in some of the autumn’s top events with the 2013 Doncaster Mile a possibility.
“There’s some lovely races for a horse like him through the autumn,” Kolivos said.
“Be it in his own age group in the Guineas type races and then there’s some very nice open age weight-for age races and the possibility of a race like the Doncaster.
“We haven’t locked in a specific program.”
Kolivos said it was unlikely that Pierro will be tested over 2000 metres this campaign as he was when third in the Cox Plate during the spring.
Despite losing his undefeated record in the Caulfield Guineas to fellow colt All Too Hard, Pierro had an outstanding spring that saw him record to dominant wins before the Group 1 placings in the Guineas and Cox Plate.
Pierro’s outstanding record stands at eight wins from 10 starts and he has collected more than $3.5 million in prizemoney.
