One of eight feature races on the Jeep Magic Millions Gold Coast Race Day in Queensland, the $175,000 Korean Air Magic Millions Stayers Cup (1800m) is set to run as Race 2 at 12:45pm.

The race has drawn a final field of 14 starters plus three emergencies with Al Maher six-year-old Kinnersley, to be ridden by regular jockey Tommy Berry, the 59kg top-weight in gate six.

Kinnersley enjoyed a good win in the Goulburn Cup back in November but failed to fire last start when three lengths away 10th to All Legal in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm on December 22, an effort they will be looking to improve on this weekend.

The three other horses weighted above the 54kg minimum for the Magic Millions Stayers Cup in 2013 are then the Liam Birchley-trained Brisbane veteran Pepperwood (56.5kg), local hope Bid Spotter (55.5kg) and Hugh Bowman’s mount Fantastic Blue (55kg) who is also drawn on the rails.

Horses coming off good recent form meanwhile include the Neville Saunders-trained Toowoomba visitor Equissential after their third on the trot after back-to-back wins in Brisbane this summer, and Gary Duncan’s flying Elvstroem four-year-old Master Avatar who has won their past four starts consecutively.

Equissential has drawn favourably in gate four for Saturday while Master Avatar is out wide in gate 14, the latter coming off a brilliant two and a half length victory over 1826m on a Slow (7) Eagle Farm track on Boxing Day.

While the form surrounding Jet Spur five-year-old Equissential is good Saunders admits that running the horse for the third time in as many weeks isn’t exactly ideal.

“I set him for the Stayers Cup two months ago but I was worried he’d only be a borderline chance of getting a start if I didn’t run him (at Eagle Farm on January 5),” he said.

“Going three weeks in a row isn’t ideal but it’s a two hundred thousand dollar race so it’s worth a throw at the stumps.”

Other notable hopes include the in-form Kelly Schweida-trained What Happenedhenry, Tony Gollan’s Al Maher gelding Epic Dragon, and the local Bryan Guy-trained duo of Noisy Ocean and Anagold.
