2013 Gosford Gold Cup Odds Lead by Moriarty

Chris Waller’s in-form European import Moriarty has opened top of the markets for Thursday’s Gosford Gold Cup 2013 as they vie for their second stakes win on the trot.

Moriarty has opened favourite to win Thursday's Gosford Gold Cup 2013

The Clodovil five-year-old is one of 11 remaining hopefuls for this year’s $125,000 Listed Gosford Quarries Gosford Gold Cup (2100m), set to run as Gosford Race 6 at 6:15pm, following the early scratching of #11 Panko and #13 Carnegie Royale.

Securing their first black type victory on New Year’s Day Moriarty caught the eye when defeating Darci Be Good by one and a half lengths in the Listed Tattersalls Club Cup (2000m) at Rosehill.

The bookies are now tipping that good form to continue installing them as the $3.40 favourite in the Gosford Gold Cup odds after Moriarty, to be ridden by Hugh Bowman who replaces Corey Brown, drew ideally with barrier four.

The Gosford Gold Cup is shaping up as a tight betting affair in 2013 with plenty of livewire chances, four of Moriarty’s rivals also at single figures with:

  • #9 Travolta ($4.60) – Drawn on the rails with Tommy Berry to ride, a former New Zealander now prepared by Gai Waterhouse, gets in on the 54kg minimum despite having won two of the last three starts including their last at Canterbury over 1900m on December 29
  • #3 Fiumicino ($6) – Veteran Zabeel nine-year-old, early market mover should get a gun run from gate three, racing in good form having won the ATC Cup last month before running a distant third at Rosehill in the Christmas Cup two weeks later back to 2100m (dropping 300m) should work in their favour here
  • #2 Reuben Percival (blink text=”$6.50″]) – Another Waterhouse-trained runner, this six-year-old resuming having last run a brave second to Ibicenco in the Sandown Cup over the two miles in Melbourne back in November, genuine stayer but doesn’t usually run their best first-up
  • #1 Ironstein ($8.50) – Gerald Ryan’s 59kg top-weight also comes from the Sandown Cup when a disappointing seventh, plenty of good runs over their career and during the spring and has been competitive in much tougher fields
