Lightly-raced gelding Famous Seamus will be set towards some big targets at the 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival with the 2013 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) the major goal.
The four-year-old travelled to Melbourne unsuccessfully in the spring, finishing 13th in his only start in the Listed MSS Security Sprint.
He earned the trip to Victoria on the back of a breakthrough stakes win in the Listed Lightning Handicap at Randwick and trainer Norm Mayfield-Smith put the disappointing Melbourne result down to him being a poor traveller.
“He went from 510 kilograms to 498 even though he ate well all the time. He just proved to be a terrible traveller,” Mayfield-Smith told AAP.
The Hawkesbury trainer had previously considered taking the son of Elusive City to Brisbane in the winter for the Stradbroke Handicap but now believes Sydney targets are more suitable following the failed Melbourne experiment.
Mayfield-Smith said the 2013 Doncaster Mile is a race he will also be nominated for but thinks his makeup and racing style make him an ideal candidate for the George Ryder in April.
“He can settle anywhere and has a high cruising speed,” he said.
Famous Seamus is likely to trial in February before beginning his autumn campaign where he will be out to build on his impressive early career resume.
The four-year-old has won five times from 12 starts and finished in the minor placings on three other occasions.
Mayfield-Smith is hoping Famous Seamus can become his third Group 1 winner after previously tasting top tier success with Landsighting in the 2004 Stradbroke Handicap and Top Swing in the 2003 Caulfield Guineas.
