Connections of Ballarat galloper British General have declared that the in-form five-year-old will be scratched from this Saturday’s Chester Manifold Stakes 2013 at Flemington despite the horse having won their past two races at Victoria’s premier course if current heat wave continues to hit New South Wales.
The son of General Nediym has been in excellent form over the past month winning two 1400m handicaps at Flemington when ridden by Glen Boss, on standby for Saturday’s race again, on both occasions.
On Monday their name was one of 19 making up the nominations for the only black type race of the weekend with trainer Dan O’Sullivan liking them for the $120,000 Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) where they would again carry the 54kg minimum.
O’Sullivan however has since suggested the Chester Manifold would be taken off the agenda for British General because of the current heat wave and that they would only run if the temperatures dropped before the weekend.
“We want to run him and if the weather cools down then he will most likely run,” O’Sullivan said.
“It doesn’t seem as if it is going to be as hot as first predicted but I don’t want to put him in a situation that could be stressful.”
If the horse does run O’Sullivan is confident they would make the step up to black type company for the first time, the lightly-raced galloper having had just 10 starts to date, but that it would be back to restricted class next run if they don’t go to the Chester Manifold.
“I do think he’s up to it,” O’Sullivan said.
“The field looks similar to the one he beat last time so we’ll monitor the weather closely. If it’s too hot he will be saved for a restricted race a week later.”
The 2013 Chester Manifold Stakes is shaping up as a crack race this Saturday with notable hopefuls including the local 60kg top-weight Lord Of Brazil, and the Tony Vasil-trained duo of Veewap and Under The Eiffel.
The final field and barriers will be released on Wednesday and published right here at Races.com.au so stay tuned.
